Professional Registered Parliamentarian (National Association of Parliamentarians): Members (individuals in good standing who pay their dues and passed the basic membership test) must pass the Registration Examination, a written exam of five portions, and obtain RP status. RPs then can take the Professional Qualifying Course at a National Training Conference or similar event and pass the course in order to receive Professional Registered Parliamentarian status. The examinations are based on the most current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised.
Certified Professional Parliamentarian (American Institute of Parliamentarians): Members (individuals in good standing who pay their dues) must pass a six-hour written examination consisting of multiple choice, short answer, essay, and script-writing. After passing the exam, they must apply for Certified Parliamentarian status, and after review, may be approved. CPs can then take the Certified Professional Parliamentarian exam, which is an oral exam. The examinations, while slightly varying for the CP and CPP exam, are based on the most current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised, the American Institute of Parliamentarians Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, Demeter’s Manual of Parliamentary Law and Procedure, Cannon’s Concise Guide to Rules of Order, and Parliamentary Opinions II.
